I already added a nice heavy braided ground wire and was thinking about doing what you said on the black and red wires. I guess we're on the same wavelength!

I should also mention, the very first thing I do to an old car is 
install a good, heavy ground strap between the engine and the frame 
rail. NAPA has some great ones. The woven ones are said to be better, 
but I don't know why. 

On any car, even a daily driver, I like to remove every ground I can 
find and wire wheel it and everything it touches. A lot of corrosion 
lurks in there. I do one at a time so the computer, radio, etc. don't 
lose their memories.
