The shifter mechanism and how it attaches to the transmission are different. You can either get Imperial Services to convert your shifter to work properly with the later automatic, or you can replace the factory shifter with a B&M cable shifter and fit it in the original console (haven't done it, but I've seen the end results).

I will be installing a 1971 big block 727 trans in my 1965 Coronet 500,, the car was a factory 318 V8 with a floor shift counsel auto. Trans. that i wish to keep using. Will there be any problems with the change over or are there any changes that i must do pryer. Please fill me in on anything i should beware of or should buy.
