Dave it's the points in the mechanical voltage regulator that are clicking
on and off because the battery is nearing full charge. Maybe some of you
guys are too young to remember but this was normal back in the day of
mechanical voltage regulators. (God am I that old?) Replacing the VR with a
solid state replacement (VR706) will end the flickering lights and ammeter
needle. BTW do not use the one that Mopar Performance sells for racing. That
will not shut off at all and will overcharge the battery on a street car.
Here's a link to the one AutoZone sells:

Its funny that this topic popped up, because driving my '62 880 around
during the holiday, the car developed a similar problem that it didn't
have before.

I noticed it one night because the headlights were pulsating, going
from dim to bright to dim, about on the pulse of every second, or 3/4
second. I looked down and the ampmeter was doing the same thing. The
next day I drove it, the ampmeter is still pulsing towards charge +.
It doesn't pulse at idle, only when driving or off idle. I thought it
was the regulator but havn't done anything with it yet, any other
ideas other than those previously listed? Thanks.

You need to give us more information, to give you a good answer. Does it
flicker on to off to on, or on to dim to on or on to bright to on? Does it
flicker quickly or slowly or randomly? Does the ammeter wiggle back and
forth with the flicker? Does the ammeter wiggle to charge + when they
flicker or does it wiggle to discharge -? When you say interior lights do
you mean dash lights or dome lights or both? Are the dome lights flickering
with the headlight switch set to have the dome light off? Does it do it
while driving or idling or all the time? Does it do it with headlights on
or off or all the time? Belt adjusted correctly to the alternator?
