Yes, the play can be adjusted for some causes of excess play.   Use your factory shop manual for the exact procedure, it is rather tricky and must be done right to avoid binding at dead center.  If you don’t have a shop manual, get one – you will not be able to do a “complete restoration” without one!  The procedure may also be given in the IML archives; I know it has been discussed before.  Do not use the instructions for the power steering gearboxes as used in the later years, those are completely different.  

 

Before trying to adjust the gear box, inspect all the steering linkage, paying special attention to the idler arm and the drag link end fittings, as those are common causes of excessive play.

Hi everybody

I`m doing a complete restoration on 1950 Imperial and I need some help,my steering "box" has some play,the steering wheel turns like a 1/4 without moving the wheels I`d like to know if possible to adjust it and if so how to do it
