Re: IML: An old question - reviving the Imperial

Theresa and others interested in this thread:

I couldn't agree more with many of your statements regarding the 'retro' look of certain cars and the possibility of the Imperial being re-introduced.  I too have uttered those same words, "Who would have thought?"  Personally, if done correctly, I would very much enjoy seeing a new Imperial (say along the lines of Virgil Exner Jr,'s '03 concept Imperial).

I just wanted to add what was told to me by the salesman at the dealership where I purchased the Magnum, the district manager for the southeast and one designer at DC.  Of course, they may not be privy to inside information.  Who knows what will be on the road in the next five years?  Who would have ever thought a Hemi engine would be back on America's streets, roads and highways?  Stranger things have happened.  We'll just have to wait and see (and hope)!  Lincoln is considering re-introducing the slab sided early '60s, suicide door Continental as a 2009 model!

Best regards,

Greg
Yes, I LOVE my new '05 Magnum RT (not just a grocery getter, I promise you - LOL!)

Greg:

They may never bring back the Imperial, I don't know.  All we have heard is rumors, and seen an article or two debating the issue in a couple of different venues.  However, my point is that I would not offer a blanket "no" on the subject.  I mean really...who thought they would bring out a T-bird reminiscent of the 1956, or the PT Cruiser, or the new retro Mustang.  I guess you just never know, if there is a market for something, someone will fill the niche.  I also agree with John that who stated that persons looking to buy a new 300 are not likely at all to be the same type of crowd out looking at a Mercedes.  My rich uncle drives a Mercedes as a symbol of his status in the community (yeah, whatever).  Whereas I am the Chrysler type, a firm believer in MOPAR OR NO CAR. Two completely different classes of cars if you ask me, and two classes of persons for that matter.  So, if they build it...I will buy.  If not...too bad for me, but as you said, my vintage one will have to suffice.

Enjoy that new Magnum Greg!  I went out and test drove that baby right after it showed up in the show room, and when my oldest son gets his license later this year...Oh yeah, that car will be mine, but right now I have too many people, and that just ain't enough car for us all.  I swore I would never drive a station wagon unless it was that 1959 Imperial wagon on the website, but I think an exception will be made in this case! LOL

Take care all!

Theresa and All,

I recently purchased a Dodge Magnum RT (ordered it for my 50th birthday).  I
fell in love with its retro styling from the moment I saw it last summer!
As much as I love vintage cars, I bit the bullet, went into debt, and
ordered the first new car in a LONG time!  Although I buy new trucks for my
business, I haven't owned a new car since the Chrysler LeBaron I bought in
'91.

While I was at the dealership, I had a long talk with the salesman who seems
to have his finger on the pulse of DC.  He informed me DC has no plans
whatsoever of bringing back the Imperial name.  He indicated DC is far more
interested in building powerful, sporty cars such as the 300C, the Magnum
RT, the Crossfire, and most recently, the Hemi-powered Charger.  I told him
I consider my '65 Imperial convertible powerful and sporty and I would be
back to his dealership in the future to buy an Imperial should one ever be
re-introduced.  He laughed and said "Well Greg, it's been nice doing
business with you but I don't think I will ever be selling you a new
Imperial."

I have a friend from another list who is one of the engineers at DC that
designed the Magnum.  He echoed the salesman's comments.  He has heard
absolutely nothing about DC considering the re-introduction of the Imperial.
I asked him directly and he answered in the same manner.  I asked him to
check on this and get back to me should he find out anything to the
contrary.  That was several weeks ago and I've heard nothing from him.  I
will email him tonight and ask if he found out any good news regarding the
Imperial's resurrection.

For now, I guess we will have to be content with our 'old ones'!
