I add a pad under the carpet similar to what was there before. It is called "jute backing". The new stuff isn't the same color as the old, but it is about the same thickiness and works just as well. I have also glued this to the inside of the roof panel, and to the floor under the back seat to help deaden sound.

Some newer cars have used a tar like substance that has a paper backing which serves to better insulate the door panels and firewall. This is available from wholesalers and can be cut to fit your application. Once installed, it is very difficult to remove.

Many of these things might offend the purists, but in some ways things have improved. If you are after sound deadening and rust prevention, to me it is okay to get a little bit creative.
