Re: IML: 1960 PARTS on EBAY - what a value?

Hi;
Actually there is really that much labour in cleaning off trim parts
because the chrome plater usually submerges them in a tank and strips them
in a chemical bath. They then clean them in another tank and then copper
plate them at least twice depending on what it needs. The main amount of
labour is in the buffing process but judging by the original plating job on
those grilles they didn't spend much time on buffing between the bars. I
have one of these 1960 grills and the bars are way to close together for
anyone to buff, my example has the mirror shine on the front edges of the
bars and very little pitting so the plating must be of good quality.
I would gather that if one were to go to several different platers on
would get several different quotes. From what I understand most good platers
specialise in either restoring pot metal or in restoring steel parts like
bumpers, probably due to the repair techniques being very different. The
fellow in my parts with the Chrysler Airflow had the pot metal sent to one
plater and the bumpers sent to another, the pot metal was pitted and broken,
the front bumper was caved in.

With regard to Kenyon question:

A redo chrome job might be so expensive because a grille is very time
consuming to clean properly before it can be rechromed !
Think of all those grill bars (I have just cleaned my grille today, so I
know what I am talking about :) that must be cleaned inside and outside
thouroughly before the rechroming can take place.

Regards,

Robert
