That's essentially what I did on my 77 New Yorker. I disconnected all the
headlights and pulled out a complete headlight wiring harness from my parts
pile. I plugged the replacement harness into the headlights then wired that
to the relays (yes, one for high and one for low beam). I control the
relays simply by controlling the relays by using the stock headlight socket
connections as Dave suggests.

I exchange all my headlamp bulbs with halogen as they burn out. Haven't
had any problems with current capacity or heat build up. Another thing that
may help is to bypass all that old wire from the switch to the lamps by
installing a relay at (or near) the bulbs directly to 12+, and use the
switched wire to activate the relay. Just my 2 cents.
