This particular thing did not happen to my car but from what I know of the overly complex linkage system inside that ignition switch, this sounds completely possible. I happen to have bought a set of security screw drivers a few years ago so I didn't have to go hunting for them when I needed them for that job. It's no secret where I got them, it just would mean nothing to you if I told you where. You should be able to find them at a tool supply store.
