Re: IML: 90 IMP key Ingition

A similar thing happened to me, but in the opposite way.  I turned my key one morning to start my Imp, and just heard a "CRACK" noise.  After that, the key just flopped around loose and i could turn it around 360 degrees with no restriction.  I pulled the housing off the back of the column (after removing the airbag and wheel, don't do that it's not needed) and found those screws.  I used a screwdriver and hammer  to punch the security pin out of the middle (some security, eh?) and then just used my torx bit to remove the ignition module.  It took some fenagling, since the 'pretty plastic' housing outside the column doesn't come off completely.  My electronic module was fine, and the lock cylinder was what was broken.  Went to my stealership, got a new one, and had it keyed for about $50 bucks, and was back on the road.  I'm not sure what that electronic module will cost you (if that's what's going on), but I'd imagine that any chrysler ignition module there would be the same...worth a check to the junk yard instead of Chrysler =)

Hope that helps,
-Jason

This particular thing did not happen to my car but from what I know of the
overly complex linkage system inside that ignition switch, this sounds
completely possible.  I happen to have bought a set of security screw
drivers a few years ago so I didn't have to go hunting for them when I
needed them for that job.  It's no secret where I got them, it just would
mean nothing to you if I told you where.  You should be able to find them at
a tool supply store.  For example...

Hello Brad
Thanks for the fast help, as Merial is sitting on the side of the
road all alone.  I'm hopping it is just the key switch. did yours go nuts
when it broke. i have never had a car i could not shut off. as in the key
would not turn to the off position. I have the cover off but the screw are
Torx non-tamper. the one with the hole in the end of the bit. were can i get
them. I sure don't have the cash to have her towed to the dealer. if it is
just the switch it looks pretty ez to change.

Alan
