Thanks for all the suggestions.  It seems that some of you were correct.  
The power brake booster is leaking - the engine starts running rough when I 
apply the brakesa, otherwise it idles properly.  Tomorrow morning it goes in 
for the new unit and I hope that will take care of the problem.  I guess my 
concern about it not getting up and going is simply because it is one heavy 
car.

I'll let you know the results, thanks.  I have to go sop up the spilled 
blinker fluid from my carpet before it dries in the hot Las Vegas sun.
