If this car hasn't had gas in it in 30 years, the very next thing I would do
is remove the tank & clean it. I bought a 60 that sat for many years with
gas in it & the tank was more then 1/2 full of thick sludge.
I'm betting that is why the float isn't registering because it probably
can't move. If you let that stuff travel forward, you'll need more then the
tank cleaned. I wouldn't even start the car until you are certain of what's
going on inside that tank.

Subject: IML: stuck float in gas tank
The float in my '71 Imperial is apparently stuck. On the level it never
goes over 1/4 tank. Because of the the tank inlet design I fill the car
up wih gas with the front end on a downward slope to enable a full tank.
WELL now - with a full tank - the check guages light stays on as it won't
go much over the empty mark.. This is the 2nd fresh tank of gas into the
car after 30 years. Any ideas how to un=stick the float [short of pulling
the tank] Thank again for any help Regards Peter Thielman
