RE: IML: Undercoating removal

i have been there and done that.  i scraped off only the undercoating that had to come off.  i used various scraping and scratching tools but i did  not hammer or chisel at any of it.  i did not want to damage any threads or accidentally poke a hole in mr gas tank.  when i got down to visible metal i used various brushes and solvents (my favorite is gas)  but i recomend other less flamable solvents like naptha or diesel, etc.  next oil it and start cranking the nuts down.  after i get it off i clean it again with the wire brush.  after reassembley i spray more undercoat on it all over again.  i do that because i believe it was still easier than getting  rusted nuts and bolts off then throwing them away and having to replace them.  good luck and watch that dirt in your eyes.  David Norris 71 4dr hdtp "the gold brick"

Subject: IML: Undercoating removal

I am getting ready to remove my gas tank and as I was checking the bolts that hold the tank strap, I realized that the were covered with undercoating (factory?).  When I say covered you can barely make out the strap or that there is a nut on the threaded portion. My questions are; Is there a way to dissolve the under coating on this part of the strap so I can get a wrench or socket on it? Will I end up having to "chop" my way through it?

Did the Imperials all come with factory undercoating or was a dealer applied item?
Thanks,
Greg
