I had already e-mailed a friend in NZ and asked whether he was awoken in the middle of the night, or if they treat these things the way we treat our tornado warnings.? J? Here is what he replied:
“First I heard about it was 7am.?? Apparently our news radio station rang the govt. to ask whether the reports were true and that's what first stirred our civil defense.”
So I guess everybody is OK….? BTW, later news reports said the warning was cancelled 2 hours after it was issued and nothing had happened.? So Imperials With Kiwis are all safe.

The quake's epicenter was about 90 miles off the coast of Tonga, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake struck Wednesday 3:26 p.m. UTC, or 4:26 a.m. Thursday in Tonga.
