There are a couple of reports on how to do this posted on the IML site- have you researched the 68 pages for this yet? My method is to remove the plates from their panels, strip the existing coating with paint remover or acetone, polish the brass with very fine steel wool, being careful to use long straight strokes, clean off the metal with "prep-sol" or another degreaser, and then spray with clear Krylon lacquer. I redid my 68 brass about 5 years ago, and it still looks quite good, as you can see on the Multiplex Stereo pages on the IML site.
