I have had this happen several times when it had nothing to do with the engine
itself. A couple of times it has.
In my case it was once the power steering pump, and the other time it happened
badly, it was a transmission cooler line.
On the car where the problem was the engine, the car had so much "blow-by" that
the crankcase was pressurized and pushing oil out the filler cap. It was then
running down the engine and getting caught in the air currents, carrying it to
the back of the car. That is where it gathered and made a big mess. Looking
under the car did not seem to reveal anything out of the ordinary, except the
spot where the oil was actually dripping from.
It doesn't take a "chassis bath" of oil for this to happen.
If you run your finger over the film, you should be able to tell if the oil is
red, or black. I am thinking that it was said that the engine was NOT consuming
motor oil.
