When I was in junior high, it was common to see Imperial's and New Yorker's
pulling Airstream's. They were the preferred car obviously because of the
superior V-8, but also because the Torqueflite Automatic stood up to the
challenge better than the competition. Imperial's also were said to have had a
sight edge due to the separate frame, although I never exactly knew why.
By the early '70s, motor homes were starting to replace vacation trailers. I
believe that they were considered safer because so many people tried to pull
trailers with cars that were not up to it, both in moving forward and stopping.
Motor homes were built to perform their intended task from the start, as
opposed to passenger cars that needed to be "souped up" to handle the extra
load.
I can imagine how wonderful the '66 would have looked pulling that stunning
Airstream! They were both the best of their time.
