Re: IML: 80s EFI timed stalling

Rob:

I experienced the "stalling after warm up" problem on my 81 a couple of years ago.  These challenging machines seem to defy methodical analysis.  However, the most recent problem (the second time) was corrected by replacing the hydraulic support plate with one from another car.  The car has run fine for nearly two years now with the exception of a power loss after warm up.  That was corrected by replacing the coolant temperature sensor.  As far as I can tell the first "stalling after warm up" problem (about 4 years ago) was corrected by replacing the computer.  My experience was the same as yours.  It would start and run fine for 15 to30 minutes.  Then would stall at a stop sign, just like someone shut off the ignition.  It would even stall while driving and simply would not start again until I let it set for 30 to 45 minutes..  Then it would start up and run like nothing had happened.

I replaced a number of items during each incident.  Usually one component at a time.  However, since new components are not  usually available there are times when you replace a faulty component with another faulty component.  Unless you revert back to the original set up every time the actual cuplrit may be overlooked.

I have replaced the Hall effect pickup coil in the distributor a couple of times and never found it to correct the problem.  However, the stalling failure mode would tend to act like an open circuit in the pickup coil.  I have also replaced the oxygen sensor with no improvement.

I am afraid I am not much help Rob.  Mine has worked fine for the past two years.  From my experience the "stalling after warmup" has been corrected only by replacing the computer or the hydraulic support plate.  I believe the power module is the item that fails in the hydraulic support plate.  Dick Benjamin has much more knowledge about the specific component failure modes.  I just replace components.  I have disassembled and reassembled the DC motor and pump inside the support plate but I doubt that is the cause of many failures.

I have never replaced the shut down module, any of the relays, the ignition resistor, ignition switch,  or any of the other small components.  I did have an in-tank fuel pump fail but it just will not run when this happens.

Good luck on the troubleshooting.  If you have specific questions that I might be able to help with please ask me.  I have done most everything on my 81 but often I am not sure why.
