                It could be that they had different gauges depending on what generator you had. I know for my '59 Plymouth they had generators anywhere from 30,35,40 and 50 amps. Although they didn't have ammeters I'm thinking this is the answer in your case. See if anyone has a parts manual for '57 and get them to look it up. It may reveal the true answer. Hope this helps. OK members, got one for ya.
 
I was going through my new owners manual for my "new" 57 Dodge. Noticed in the book that any pic of the "amp" gauge says "50", mine in the car and a spare set of gauges I just bought from an Ebayer say "30".
 
What's up with that? Any ideas anyone?
