Re: [Chrysler300] Freeze Plugs Continued - reply

Hi Tom, and all...

That is one-mail that I would rather have not seen dug up, as it really
muddies the waters. The correct dish-type core plug size for the 413 blocks
up to and including 1961 is 1 5/8". That is what the parts books call for.
1 41/64" plugs are not ever mentioned in any parts books. I don't even
think that size plug was ever made, either by Mopar, or Dorman, or other
suppliers. My recollection of subsequent conversations with George Riehl
on this matter is that we finally came to the conclusion stated above - and
I felt it necessary to post this reply publicly before everyone gets
confused, and runs out trying to buy 1 41/64" core plugs !

With proper cooling system maintenance I have had no problem with steel core
plugs. I have had problems in troublesome installation areas with the copper
or brass plugs. The softer plugs are not very forgiving if not installed
exactly straight. Once in, they work just fine, however.

Dorman makes a Neoprene plug (Quick-Seal expansion plugs) that I have used
(with great reluctance) and will seal in an emergency. The neoprene will
deteriorate with engine oil for example so I do not consider them a
permanent fix.

The Dorman Quick-Seal Copper Expansion Plug product I do feel is a permanent
installation. The 1 5/8" size expand up to 1.655" dia. according to the
catalog and 1 41/64" dia. mentioned is 1.641" dia. so the 1 5/8" plug should
by book numbers anyway suffice for that size. In my opinion, the copper
plugs look better (not like the original plugs of course) than the neoprene
plugs and are rated at 3000 psi where the neoprene plugs are rated in the
Dorman catalog at 50 psi. NAPA has them also. The copper plugs are listed 8
sizes 1 1/4" dia to 2 1/4" dia. only. Permatex # 1A sealer will make sure
the things do not leak.
