Jonnie,Are you relying on the timing mark on the harmonic balancer for timing? The reason I ask is that I have seen the outside come unbonded from the hub and let the mark be off. You said earlier that it almost seemed to be trying to run. That is the way an engine does if the spark is retarded so much it is firing the mixture way late when most of the compression is gone. you might try cranking the distributor ahead a few degrees at a time and see if it tries harder to start and if it starts to try, keep advancing until it starts, then check with a timing light to see where the mark is.
If this works, you probably need your harmonic balancer redone, but as long as it isn't wobbling, you could paint a mark to use if all you are wanting to do is get it started to run enough to check out, but I wouldn't drive it until you are sure it isn't moving around and might come off and cause damage.
