I agree, the tube is not likely the problem. However, for the not so quite purest, a hidden PVC would be an option. A crafty person might manage to install a PCV valve in the Downdraft tube and run a hose up the back of the engine and into the back of the Air-cleaner. It could be almost invisible to the casual eye. That way, all those fumes would be rebreathed like in later models. Better than having a crankcase blow up with the below fix! The PVC was the first emissions device. as I remember.
