RE: [Chrysler300] anti stall device-F&G, not J&K.

Whilst on the subject, my brief study of the ’64 parts manual and pictures of J&K ram engines does not show the anti-stall device on the J&K ram engines. Perhaps that is the major difference between the 2903S carbs on the F & G and the 3505S carbs on the J&K (in addition to the change from automatic to manual chokes)? Perhaps Chrysler engineers solved the surging with internal mod’s in the carbs? Or maybe just the conversion to manual chokes—or maybe some slight difference in the linkage and its springs? There’s always a reason for surging and apparently the problem is not universal, even on F’s & G’s.

However, the proper K ram block in my K parts car came to me with red-painted short rams, 2903S carbs and the anti-surge device. Hopefully, the anti-surge device has its diaphragm intact and not leaking (always a good thing). No telling how that swap came to pass. Each car has and holds its secrets (TBTG).

I’m still looking for proper 3505S carbs but am going forth with the 2903S’s. They’ve been rebuilt and ready to feed that thirsty 413. I picked up the bucket seats for our K-rag from my upholstery guy today and the new black leather Goers hides look great. I purchased a rather generic foam kit for the front buckets from Legendary Interiors and the foam pieces took some work and trimming to fit. There does not appear to be a foam kit for the rear seats, so my upholstery guy will have to carve the foam for the bolsters from scratch.

Andy:

Let's go down the list:

Disc Brakes: I've looked into it but have not done it, even though I'm not crazy about the drum brakes, I'm still not in love with what it takes to convert to disc brakes, so due diligence keeps the factory drums in place and working.

Electric fuel pump: Yes, you betcha. But, it is hidden underneath the car in front of the tank. Only used to prime the carbs, the mechanical pump is still in place and working. Without it, the car will not start once it sits more than 2 weeks. I gave up long ago the practice of removing the air cleaners and pouring gas down the carb to get it started, no thanks!

Quartz clock: Again, you betcha. Keeps perfect time all the time the battery is connected. I could never get the spring movement to do that.

Solid state voltage regulator: Don't you just love seeing that ammeter jumping back and forth like a metronome on steroids? Not me, I'll take a nicely charged battery with a reliable regulator. Especially when it looks like a stock part.

Electronic ignition: OK, you've got me there. But it IS a Pertronix unit, all in the distributor and has no separate box or wiring. Fires off much faster than points. I can convert back to points in about an hour if I want to.

Point being, the improvements don't take away from the original look of the car, just improved performance without making any statements. The Anti-stall, however, is right on top, in your face, and would be the first thing noticed to be missing when showing the engine compartment. In addition, the 2903S stock carbs won't run properly without it, and set up right, using the factory procedures, it runs well. Ram induction simply doesn't look right without it.

Gee, Bob, I always thought of YOU as one of the ones who thinks they can do it better than Chrysler engineers. What with your posts over the years about conversions to: disc brakes, electric fuel pumps, quartz clock movements, solid state voltage regulators, and venturing a guess, maybe you use electronic ignition?

Anyway, interestingly I have not had stalling problems as you and Dave describe even though my anti-stall unit has not worked over my 26 years and 100K + miles with my G. That said, this conversation has reminded me that I do want to give mine to Jim McGowan to be redone, because I do enjoy attempting to make my car work as those Chrysler engineers intended. Perhaps someday I will get it there.

All in good 300 fun,

Well, I can assure you that is not the case with my 300G. If I don't have the anti-stall device properly set, my engine will die. There is no hard idle adjustment capability on the original 2903S carbureted F and G cars, therefore the anti-stall comes to the rescue as needed when manifold vacuum drops. Do you have the original carbs on your 300F? I'm surprised your mechanic decided that he knew better than the engineers at Chrysler, or have your carbs been changed and the system revamped?

When my 300F was restored the engine guy said the anti stall was not necessary and did not install it. I have driven the car for a long time without it and it runs perfectly, if not better. I recall that before if anything got a little out of adjustment the car would surge on the anti surge diaphragm; especially at stop lights and was very embarrassing. At idle you could open the hood and see the anti-surge plunger pumping the bell-crank.

If someone knows of a logical reason (other than C. E's put it there) I would like to know.
Thanks
J

Wanted to buy an anti stall devise for 1961 300G 413ci
or possible a 1960 300F.
This would be the one mounted on top of the
long cross rams.
NOS would be fine or a good used one
possibly work.
Also does any body know if there is someone
in the club or someone else that is refurbishing these
anti stall devises. call 1-715-387-8830 cell 1-715=613-8844
