Detonation is an explosion usually caused by pre-ignition of the fuel/air mixture by the heat of compression before the plug touches it off due the fact the flash point of the fuel is too low to prevent ignition before the plug touches it off. The fuel air mixture is consumed much faster than the controlled burn initiated by a spark plug ignition because it all ignites at once. It's signature noise comes from the effect of this violent explosion's very sudden rise in cylinder pressure hitting the piston which is often still on it's way up to top dead center. The rise in pressure is like hitting the piston with a sledgehammer blow. It can collapse the piston or hole it and beats the H out of the rod and main bearings. A well timed spark ignition with high enough octane to allow smooth flame propagation produces a much more gentle rise in cylinder pressure that pushes the piston down the bore rather that striking the piston with a sledgehammer blow.

Geez and I always thought cars were for boneheads, drinking was a much easier hobby!

I got more questions if somebody would be kind enough to answer.
       A) Is detonation the same as pinging??
       B) How do u know if you are getting detonation? OR LET ME PUT IT
       ANOTHER WAY:
Can detonation occur that u cant hear?
        C) What exactly will detonation do to an engine?
