No, or at least if it can't be heard its not as dangerous. Most modern cars
incorporate knock sensors which are crystals that produce voltage when they
vibrate at the right frequency. The computer uses these to know when it has
pushed its limit on advance. I'm all but certain you can get one or make one
to use on your older car just to know when its knocking.

Ever look in the factory shop manual? They have pictures. It is my
understanding that pinging causes the piston to get cocked breifly in the
cylinder. Diesels do it all the time, but its not the same thing because a
diesel engine relies on detonation to run and the fuel is injected at the
time of ignition instead of before compression (the fuel doesn't detonate in
the line because there isn't enough heat there, hence the use of glow plugs
to get the engine started when its cold).
I think the worst case scenario is piston/cylinder damage, valve damage, and
spark plug damage (isn't that how valves get burned, or am I mistaken?).
