Houston,
The convex side is facing out (towards you - like the hubcaps on your car).
Use Permatex #3 in the block circle/"hole" (non-hardening nasty stuff like
they use for water pumps...) and place the freeze plug in the "hole" and tap
it w/hammer enough to dimple the center; enough that it presses into the
circle of the block for a tight seal but not so hard that it distorts and
loosens. A few small taps around the perimeter of the freeze plug may be
needed if the blow was excessive, but try to seal it permanently w/the
center hammer strike.
Take care and let me know how it goes.
Happy New Year to you and your family!
Gary

Getting ready to install the dish style freeze plugs in my poly 318. My
question is what side of the "dish" faces out? I've heard the correct
method
for installation is to drive the plug in, then rap it once in the center.
That
just seems like it will drive the plug in deeper. So any explanations
would
be greatly appreciated.
