Driving the Ghia limousines

I've had the great pleasure of driving two Ghia built Crowns, one a '59
(actually one of the '58s updated with '59 trim) and the other a '64. As Jeff
indicated, they are more hefty off the line than a standard Imp, but they never
feel bulky. The long wheelbase gives a remarkably tight ride with even less
pitch motion than standard. Overall, the feel is like it's machined from a
billet, all of one piece--solid.
I've felt the same comparison as with several 6 cylinder 40's Dodges, DeSotos
and Plymouths I've driven, as compared to a '41 Crown Imperial Town sedan and
my '48 New Yorker convertible. The 6's are capable, light to the touch and
good performers around town or on the highway. The added heft and length of
the 8's is felt as a solid and vault-like feel. They aren't really any quicker
off the line than the 6's, but above about 60, the 8's will continue to
accelerate like a freight train.
Back to he Ghias, other than a slightly cramped drivers environment, they are
as enjoyable to drive as any Imperial. You do have to remind yourself when
turning that you have an extra 20 inches to deal with, tho.
Cheers,
Roger
