I took the vacuum advance off and took a look at it. I pulled
the end off that the line to the carb hooks to and all sorts of crap fell out of
the end. I guess it had been holding together barely since I bought it and
finally died last night on my way home. Would that make it run this bad or
should I look elsewhere also. I should have the new vacuum advance tomorrow
around 1:30-2:00 in the afternoon. I REALLY appreciate all the help. -

It's possible you have a vacuum leak elsewhere causing a lean
condition, but that is unlikely. Have you checked the timing chain for slack?
I can't remember if you said how many miles were on the car, but it could have
jumped a tooth. Just grab the fanbelt and pullys, then remove the cap and
watch the rotor. There should be very little hesitation in the change of
direction at the distributor rotor when you reverse direction at the crank and
pulleys. If the mechanical advance was stuck, I think the car would bog, but
not spit and pop like you say. One thing you can do, is grab the line leading
to the vacuum advance, or add a piece of rubber line too it. Then put it in
your mouth, Yeah, I know that sounds bad,lol. and draw or blow on it. You
should be a very little draw, then it will be tight. If the vacuum advance
diaphram is blown, you will be able to draw air through it easily. At this
point, I don't think you have a carb problem, so I would narrow my search down
the ignition and timing parts. Unless the carb has went very lean for some
reason, the carb wouldn't cause most of these symptoms, once you elminate the
accelerator pump and vacuum leaks, which you have. One last thing, if there is
a vacuum hookup for the dash to run anything in there, that is a sneaky place
for a vacuum leak to hide, may want to check it as well, just like you check
the vacuum advance. This one has got me scratching my head, but if we chase
down enough links in this poor running chain, maybe we can figure out the
problem, good luck! Let me know how it goes.

everything else I can think of. When the cadillac I had before this had carb
problems I finally ended up putting an edelbrock 4bl with an electric choke
on it. It ran perfect from that day on. I don't think they make one for a
two though. I'm not even sure that is it though at this point. After today
I'm wondering if I should of sold that car.:)

clues Sounds like the accelerator pump is not working, does the
carb squirt a little gas whenever you open the throttle? There could be a
little ball bearing missing that goes under the accelerator pump plunger
inside the carb, or possibly the linkage is out of adjustment.

back together and checked all the settings while I did it. Everything is
exactly how the service manual said to do it. It will idle now even in
gear. I can give it gas slowly and it picks up fine. If I give it gas
quickly it sputters like hell or completely shuts off. I HATE working on
carbs. Anyone know what in the carb I screwed up to cause this? Thanks.
