Wayne and all,
I'd be careful removing an engine without the tranny. I believe there's a high probability of damaging the input shaft/front pump (not sure of the design on this tranny) when pulling the engine away from it or when reassembling it. I am sure it's been done before without incident but I've seen where it damaged the front pump on a mid-60's C-6 (blasphemy, I know) which required $$ to fix.
If, the when taking a strain on the engine so that it can be separated from the bell housing, the engine could put a side load on the input shaft causing damage.
It happened in trade school in the early 70's and the shop teacher was not too happy with us. If fact, times were when it was OK to 'hit' students: A well placed fist, semi-gently where the arm-shoulder meet, it left a lasting impression for a few days, probably why I am telling this story.

In this '57 Dodge Coronet, can the engine only be removed from the car while leaving the powerflite in the chassis? If so, is it just a matter of removing the bellhousing to block bolts and then the torque converter goes which way? - stays with the motor or hangs on the input shaft of the transmission?
Or must the trans come out with the engine and then be removed from it afterwards?
Thanks,
Wayne
