Subject: Gas tank sender

Hi folks;

Anyone know were I can buy a 59 gas tank sender, my book says , anything
that had a 23 Gallon ( Canadian ) tank will do . I put my old one back in
and then put 10 gallons of gas in tank to discover it don't work. The
gauge works when I short it off half way back to the tank , so I'm
thinking sender ?

I never changed the trans fluid in my first 300K, and owned it from 97,000
to 120,000 miles (ex-Bruce Brownell-owned--anyone seen it? It's Roman Red
TT-1 with an aftermarket full white vinyl top- scored 810 points at an
'80's Club meet with an undetailed engine compartment - possibly in
Vermont or New Hampster-:] ). No trans troubles. I had the same
experience with a '63 Newport, bought w/39,000 original miles, sold with
140,000+, never any trouble with the transmission either.
It has been a different story with my Venture minivan - it was bought with
16,000 miles, and fluid changes were done at 50,000 & 75,000 miles, and a
trans rebuild at 93,000. Since then, I have added a trans cooler and
changed the filter & replaced the fluid with Redline full-synthetic every
15,000 miles. Overkill? Maybe, but since then, I've towed a K from
Wisconsin to Florida with it, and a K from Alabama to Florida and a '64
Newport T&C just across the state.
The van now has 179,000 and the transmission works perfectly, despite
being pressed beyond its limits. Another Venture owner said they rebuilt
at 70,000, and the main culprit for failure was HEAT. The multiple
'modern' plastic parts (not commonly found in Cast-Iron or 727
Torqueflites) had MELTED and no longer performed their intended function.
Just my two cents' worth.

Regarding transmissions, I was surprised to see the level of maintenance
required for my 2000 Durango. The owner's manual recommends frequent fluid
changes for the transmission, transfer case and differentials. I followed
the schedule and noticed the fluid in the transfer case really needed to
be
changed.

Ben,
Try grounding the sender-to-gauge wire right at the sender. If that still
works the gauge OK, reconnect the wire and run a jumper from frame to
sender
body to ensure it's grounded, and see if that fixes the problem. If not,
you've got a bad sender.

Hi guys,

There is a seller of repro fuel tank senders, I have seen on (where else)
e-Bay. These are new units, they don't look like the originals, but
appear
to be good replacements. He seems to make senders for a lot of cars, and
sells units for our Chryslers. Here's the info:

AtwaterkentAKMFG@xxxxxxx
 508-792-9500
Rich
Atwater Kent Co

Also I seem to remember that our own Gary Nelson advertised this service,
as
follows:

I rebuild senders. I completely disassemble clean, repair and test. If
it
does not work you don't pay. $65+ frt. includes new sender to tank seal.
Let me know if I can help.

Subject: Torsion Bars

I have beefed up the suspension on my 300L with a heavier-than-stock front
anti-sway bar, rear sway bar, koni adjustable shocks and an increase in
the rear spring rate by adding a leaf. The only outstanding item is that I
find the front spring rate to be a little soft for my liking. So I am
wondering if there are higher rate torsion bars available that would fit
the car. I believe that a "heavy-duty" suspension was optional in '65 but
I don't know if that option included higher rate torsion bars. If it did,
presumably those torsion bars would have a larger diameter than standard.
My torsion bars are .975 inches in diameter.

I know heavy duty aftermarket torsion bars are available for B and E
bodies but so far I have not come across any for C bodies.

Can anyone comment on the possibility of obtaining higher spring rate
torsion bars?

Thanks.

I just bought two new sending units from Atwaterkent One for my 56 Fury
and One for my 55
Chrysler. They seem to be well built. They also carry a assortment of
gaskets and
locking rings. They will rebuilt yours and they will buy any old units
that you have.
Just don't through your old ones away.
