Re: [SPAM]Re: [Chrysler300] crankshaft

Jerry; The externally balanced engines, standard were cast cranks. Balancing was not too critical, but were still balanced to certain minimun specs. All other forged cranks, i.e., 426 hemis were done to rigid specs as well as the hi-po 440s. In 1971 and up, the 440s, in particular, were of the "thin wall castings" and according to the factory, were not subject to more than an .030 overbore for rebuild. Somewhere I read that the "thin wall" casting were about 45# lighter than the early ones. It is interesting to note that the 413 blocks of '59 thru '65 were able to be bored from 4.1817" (stock) to 4.25", as the '64 426 cu. in. wedge engine bore without any problem. But the '64 426w engine did have slightly thicker walls than the 413 would have bored to that size, for the serious racer. I have done one 413 engine, bored to .020 over 426w specs (440 914 heads) and today has about 40, 000 miles on it with no problems. Not in a 300, but a beautiful '64 New Yorker 4 dr. ht. somewhat customized.
As I have mentioned before, Chrysler blocks and heads had the highest content of chrome and nickel than any other manufacturer during those early years. Quality, quality.

  George,
Now that is awesome information. Did Chrysler continue to do that to the later models 440 and Hemi engines?

Bob; ALL '55 thru '65 letter car cranks are hardened and take the tri-metal bearings. AND, all 300 engines are balanced to +- 2 grams at the factory. N.Y, & Imp. are only balanced to as much as 30 grams. All hi perf engines are balalanced to the minimum, that takes in the 361s, 383s, etc and many of the "A' block engines. That is for the higher RPMs.

  George,

What years of letter car crankshafts would this be true for, in addition to
the '55 300s, if you know please? In particular the 300F and G engines.

Rich; Just had this discussion with a Club member.........both cranks are
forged.......300, marine and industrial crank bearing journals are flame
hardened to .060, New Yorkers and Imperials are not hardened. Other than
that, both are the same in dimentions and interchangeable. Tri-metal bearing
used on hard cranks, Non tri-metal bearings used on the others.

Just curious. Is there any difference between a 1955 C-300 crank and one
  from a NY or Imp?
