I have to confess that I have one of the few 56
Chrysler with a 3speed stickshift. Not only that, but it's a Limo also
:-)
If you ask me they should never have made the car
with this transmission. One can see on the details that it was never supposed to
be delivered either. My car has a rear-end that are too high geared, it does
almost 55mph on 1st! Reverse I won't even mention, I have never backed the car
without riding on the clutch yet. The dash is a 55 with a blindplate over the
opening for the "flightcontrol"
The worst thing is that the steeringcolumn are a
inch or two longer than the originally and in a Limo where the seat is pulled
forward to make more room in the back one can only imagine how tight it will be.
On top of that my car have manual steering too with 5,5 turns lock to lock. It's
more or less a pain to drive.
In other words, I drive my 56 St.Regis instead and
leave the Windsor safe in the garage :-)
I think Standard Catalog of Chrysler mention
something like 700 Chryslers total made in 56 with stickshift, that includes
also the 300's which I belive received quit a number of this
transmissions.
If somebody are interested I have some pics of the
strange setup somewhere that I can scan.
